Your options
1. Sell it privately
You can post it in expat Facebook groups or on classified sites. You may get the highest price this way, but it takes time, and it's hard to plan around a moving date. Buyers often want to drive the car until the very last day too, and the deal can fall through at the last minute.
2. Sell it to a car buyer
You get a firm offer quickly, you're paid the same day, and the buyer handles the transfer. With us you can agree the price now and hand the car over on, or close to, your departure date, so you still have transport for your last weeks.
3. Leave it with your partner or a friend
If the car stays in your name, you remain the legal owner, which includes being responsible for fines and accidents. If someone else keeps the car, transfer it into their name before you go.
4. Ship it home
This is rarely worth it. Shipping costs, import taxes and modifications to meet your home country's rules usually cost more than the car is worth, and Thailand drives on the left.
A simple timeline
- 4 to 6 weeks before you leave: get an offer. If the car is on finance, ask for your settlement amount (see selling a financed car).
- 2 to 4 weeks before: agree the price and the handover date, and check your documents.
- Last week: hand over the car, complete the transfer and get paid.
- Before you close your Thai bank account: make sure the payment has arrived, or ask to be paid by transfer to your overseas account.
Already left Thailand?
It's still possible to sell. Someone in Thailand can handle the sale for you with a power of attorney that you sign. Because the original signatures and documents are needed, it's much easier to sign everything before you fly. If you've already left, contact us and we'll explain what's needed in your case.
Quick answers
What should I do with my car when leaving Thailand?
Most expats sell it before they leave. Selling to a car buyer is the fastest way: you get an offer quickly, you're paid the same day, and the buyer handles the transfer.
Can I keep using my car until I leave Thailand?
Yes. You can agree the price in advance and hand the car over on or close to your departure date.
